I first became interested in bodybuilding while playing rugby union in New Zealand. Still at high school at the time, I started going to the gym to stay fit during the rugby off season. I soon found that I preferred lifting weights to playing rugby. After a year of lifting at World Gym in Auckland, I was convinced to compete by friends and fellow gym members.
My first competition was the 1995 IFBB Central North Island competition, a regional competition similar to the state level IFBB Championships held in Australia. To my surprise I won my novice class and went on to win at the New Zealand Nationals and place second in the Australasian Championships in the novice class.
I competed again in the under 80kg class in 1997 winning the IFBB Central North Island Championships and the New Zealand Nationals that same year.
After that I took three years off and moved to Melbourne. In 2000, I tried my hand at competing in Australia for the first time. I entered and won the IFBB Victorian State Titles in the under 80kg class. I went on to take second at the Australian Nationals under 80kg class that same year.
My preparation for the 2001 IFBB Victorian State Titles took a dive when I tore one of my quadriceps muscles 6 weeks out from competition. Forced to rest that year, I prepared long and hard for the 2002 IFBB season. The result was a win at both the Victoria State titles in the under 80kg class and the National Title in the under 75kg class. One highlight was the impromptu “overall” title that Tony Doherty held at the Victorian State Titles which saw me pitted against, and win, against the winners of the other weight classes.
Since 2002, I have competed at the 2003 and 2004 Paul Graham Pro Qualifier, without winning the pro card on offer.
