In the time since the Gold Coast was re-admitted back into the NRL, the Gold Coast Titans have been a success story in the making. There is no denying the Gold Coast connection to the 2003 premiership winning Penrith Panthers, with several of the premiership team at the reigns of the Titans, from Coach John Cartwright, to Football Manager Scott Saddler. After the success of the 2003 team, it seemed obvious to those who had been taking the quality Redbak supplements, that this was the company to be dealing with in the inaugural 2007 Titans season.
In February 2007, the Titans played their historic first game in Coffs Harbour…a trial against the Melbourne Storm. In front of 10,000 supporters the Titans rolled out their younger development squad players. They acquitted themselves magnificently before going down to a full strength Melbourne side.
In the following weeks, John Cartwright fielded his full strength team in two other pre-season trials. Against Parramatta at Lismore’s Oakes Oval, the Titans emerged victorious 26 – 10 and the following week in the teams debut match in front of their home fans on the Gold Coast, they ran out 28 – 6 winners over the Penrith Panthers.
The Gold Coast Titans are doing more than was expected of them in their first year back in the NRL. Most expected the team to be the cellar-dwellers of the competition, but instead, are well placed inside the top 8, and look to be real contenders come finals time. And what will be the difference come finals time?
